Hunter Solar Project Heats Up for Year Two

Welcome to the Hunter Solar Project website! Visit often to stay up to date on the solar project at Hunter College, check out our photos, events, and articles.

A group of student activists founded the Hunter Solar Project more than a year ago, with the goal of installing a solar energy system on the Hunter College campus for renewable energy generation, education and research. Thanks to the contributions of many incredible individuals and organizations, we are well on our way to realizing this vision.

We began our fundraising efforts in the spring of 2009, and recently secured all of funds necessary to purchase and install a 3 kW solar energy system on campus! Funds for the solar installation came from several sources within the Hunter College and City University of New York community including the Hunter College Undergraduate Student Government, Auxiliary Enterprise Corporation, President Jennifer Raab, Sustainability Council, and the City University of New York.

In May 2009 our student organization received the Clinton Global Initiative University Outstanding Commitment Award for the solar project. In addition to this honor, we received a generous grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to pilot the Solar Tour Program, an educational program that will educate thousands of Hunter College and NYC Public High School students about solar energy technology.

As a public institution, Hunter College must receive approval from the New York State Division of Budget before beginning design & construction of the solar energy system. While we await State approval, we are moving ahead developing curriculum for the Solar Tour Program, and planning a year of exciting environmental events on campus.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Together we can bring renewable energy education to our schools and prepare the next generation of leaders to realize a more sustainable energy future.
