The Green Initiative Fund

On Wednesday, February 24 Hunter Solar Project and a coalition of student organizations launched a campaign to establish The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) at Hunter College. TGIF, based on UC Berkeley’s successful model, will support innovative environmental projects proposed by members of the Hunter community. A committee, with a student majority, will review proposals and award grants to projects that promise to reduce Hunter College’s negative environmental impact, create environmental education opportunities, and/or empower students to implement solutions to environmental problems. TGIF will not raise the Student Activity Fee, but reallocate unused funds for environmental sustainability.

TGIF has been established through student referendum, which required gathering signatures from 10% of the student body to get the proposal on the ballot for student government elections in April. Over the past month, Hunter students engaged their peers in conversations about TGIF, and gathered thousands of signatures, bringing us one major step closer to realizing our vision of a greener Hunter!
